Why we made AugRank ask permission before publishing

Every marketing tool built on language models faces the same decision: does it act, or does it ask? Acting is the better demonstration. Asking is the better product, and this is the reasoning behind choosing the second.

The failure is not the average case

A model that writes good pages ninety-nine times out of a hundred is genuinely useful. The problem is the hundredth, because the cost of the failures is not distributed evenly — one confidently wrong claim about pricing, safety or a competitor, published on your domain in your name, is not offset by ninety-nine adequate posts.

Autonomy is a bet that the worst output is survivable. For a business whose website is its primary sales channel, that is a bet the vendor is making with somebody else’s reputation.

What approval actually costs

Time, and honestly. Somebody has to read the diff. We reduce that as far as we can — each change arrives with the reasoning attached, so the question is "do I agree with this?" rather than "what changed, and why?" — but it is still a person reading before a page goes live.

It also makes the product harder to demonstrate. "It writes and publishes automatically" is a better sentence in a sales call than "it writes, and then you approve". We accepted that.

Approval is configurable, not compulsory

Gating is on by default and can be turned off per change type. Fixing a broken internal link is not the same decision as publishing a 2,000-word article, and treating them identically would make the queue a chore people click through without reading — which is worse than no gate at all, because it looks like oversight.

What is never configurable is the record. Every run writes down what it audited, what it decided and what it did, whether or not a human was asked. A tool acting on your behalf should be able to account for itself afterwards.
